PURPOSE:To provide a directional optical coupler facilitating the analysis and design of a coupling area part and enabling the compactness of element size by eliminating the length of a waveguide direction changing part. CONSTITUTION:A directional optical coupler B has plural optical waveguides 12 provided in or on a dielectric base 1, and a coupling area part 15 formed by narrowing the spacing of the optical wave guides at a specified place. In this case, reflecting means 110a-110f for changing the proceeding direction of light wave are provided between the output end of one optical waveguide and the input end of the other optical waveguide. |
