PURPOSE:To obtain the subject fiber having excellent oxidation resistance, capable of being subjected to various surface treatment and coated with silicon carbide having good adhesiveness. CONSTITUTION:Carbon fibers are dipped in a solution (or a liquid at normal temperature) obtained by dissolving polysilane having Si-H group, e.g. polymethylsilane or poly(methylsilanedimethylsilane) in an organic solvent such as toluene. After the polysilane is adhered to the surface of the carbon fibers, they are dried and heat-treated (at 130-180 deg.C) in an inert atmosphere to obtain the carbon fibers all the surface of which is coated with silicon carbide. Here, when a supercritical fluid is used for adhering, the polysilane penetrates into the inner part of the carbon fibers to form a fine membrane of silicon carbide. By this method, it is easy to control a thickness of the silicon carbide membrane and this coated carbon fibers can be utilized highly efficiently and simply produced. |
