A machine for sorting in several passes comprises a feed magazine (1) from which the objects are unstacked (2), and their code is then read (3). Depending on their code, distribution means (4) send the postal objects towards different compartments (7). Thereafter, a second sorting pass consists in taking the objects back to the magazine (1) in a very specific order depending on the compartment (7) from which they originate. A conveyor (transfer) means (81, 82, 83), such as a conveyor belt, runs the length of the compartments (7). When the compartments are full, an operator empties them successively onto the conveyor means which takes them to the magazine (1) without any inversion being possible. If there are several levels of compartments (7), there will be several superposed conveyor means (81, 82, 83). A drawbridge (11) whose height can be adjusted by tilting it up or down connects the magazine (1) with the conveyor means whose load is to be taken to the magazine. Used to simplify recycling between passes and to eliminate the risks of error resulting therefrom. <IMAGE>
