PURPOSE:To provide such variable color electric discharge lamp equipment that colors of rays can be adjusted and also there can be no need to form plural electric discharging paths. CONSTITUTION:An electric discharge lamp in variable color electric discharge lamp equipment has its bulb 1 provided with paired first electrodes 2 arranged at such a distance from each other as to generate a positive column sufficiently longer in size than a negative glow, and paired second electrodes 3 arranged at a distance corresponding to not more than twice the length of the negative glow from each other. The bulb 1 has a phosphor layer 4 formed on the internal circumferential surface of its wall, and also has mercury vapor and a rare gas respectively filled thereinto. Ultraviolet rays radiated from mercury in the positive column between the electrodes 2 are converted respectively into visible ones by the phosphor layer 4, while visible rays are radiated from the rare gas in the negative glow generated between the electrodes 3. Upon this, the luminous color of the phosphor layer 4 is differentiated from that of the negative glow, and then quantities of the rays radiated respectively from both mercury and the rare gas are adjusted so that the colors of the rays can be adjusted.
