PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for color filters and to enable color display of the background color of a desired display region by laminating a liquid crystal cell and color polarizing plate for changing the background color behind an LCD for character display. CONSTITUTION:The TN type liquid crystal cell 10 for changing the background color laminated and arranged on the rear surface of the second polarizing plate 7 of the LCD 1 for character display is constituted by sealing a liquid crystal layer 13 of 90 deg. twist angle between upper and lower substrates 11 and 12 and has a sealing material 14. One dot of this liquid crystal cell 10 is made correspondent to th display region of one character of the STN type liquid crystal cell 2. The red polarizing plate 15 having the light absortion axis parallel with the polarization axis of the second polarizing plate 7 is laminated and arranged on the rear surface of the TN type liquid crystal cell 10. The TN type liquid crystal cell 10 and the red polarizing plate 15 are laminated and arranged in such a manner and while the light transmitted through the respective clots in the state not impressing a voltage to the liquid crystal cell 10 is cast forward as the back light, the light rays transmitted through the respective dots in the state of impressing the voltage to the cell are cast forward as the red back light. |
