PURPOSE:To provide a picture reader capable of reducing the load on recognizing processing and executing character recognition at a high speed by reading out a character on an original as a fixed size. CONSTITUTION:A photoelectric conversion element 15 and a lens system 16 are respectively fixed to moving stages 21, 22 and allowed to be respectively independently moved on a moving rail 23 in the optical axis direction. The rail 23 is fixed to a moving rail 24 so as to be optionally moved. The position, width and height of each character on an original 12 are detected by prescanning. The element 15 and the lens system 16 are moved in accordance with the position of a character to be read out. The element 15 and the system 16 are also moved and adjusted correspondingly to the width and height of the character to be read out so that a projected image on the element 15 is set up to almost the fixed size. Consequently, characters having respectively different sizes can be read out as almost the same size. |
