PURPOSE:To improve bistability of a ferroelectric liquid crystal or the like, to prevent electric short-circuit between substrates, and to improve productivity by forming a resin layer arranged in plural island-shape on each electrode of two substrates. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal optical element consists of a ferroelectric liquid crystal or a ferroelectric liquid crystal compsn. interposed between two substrates 1, 1 having electrodes. At least one of the substrates is transparent. Resin layers 4, 4 arranged in plural island-shape are formed on the respective electrode 2, 2 of substrates 1, 1. These substrates 1, 1 having electrodes are preferably made of plastics. The resin layers 4, 4 consist of, preferably, a material having affinity to the liquid crystal material. For example, acryl-base or silicone-base hard coating materials such as polyfunctional acrylate, epoxyacrylate, urethane acrylate, silicone acrylate, and polysiloxane are used. |
