A method of removing particles (15) adhering to dry surfaces (2) of an article to be cleaned is carried out with a wiping element (5) by this wiping element (5) and the surface (2) to be cleaned carrying out a relative movement in relation to one another and in so doing the wiping element (5) touching the surface (2) in a rubbing manner. In order that the particles (15) adhering to the surface (2) can be taken up well by the wiping element (5), the wiping element (5) is in this case moistened slightly to such an extent that the particles (15) adhere better to this wiping element than to a dry wiping element (5), this degree of moistening being selected, however, in such a manner that the surface (2) to be cleaned which is acted on thereby remains dry itself so that there the adhesion forces are not increased again by the cleaning fluid. <IMAGE>
