Reluctance machine

The invention relates to a reluctance machine which can be operated both as a motor and as a generator, preferably for use as a starter/charging generator in motor vehicles. The machine requires only one winding for each phase, without any additional field winding (excitation winding). The coil arrangement for each case is such that the rear of the stator and the rotor inner ring in each case have to absorb only the magnetic flux of one tooth pair, so that the external diameter of the machine need not be significantly larger than the internal diameter of the rotor. The field current (excitation current) for generator operation is produced by a voltage being applied to each phase winding passing through the state of maximum reluctance between the switching points S2G and S1G, the polarity of which voltage, related to the winding, is inverted with respect to the charging voltage to be emitted. The field circuit is inhibited between the switching points S1G and S2G, and the machine emits a load current which is higher than the field current. <IMAGE>
