Process and apparatus for removing acid, iron and manganese from water

A process for removing acid from (deacidification of) water or elevating the pH and hardening water, in particular for treatment to give drinking water in an in-house water supply, based on a filtration of the water to be treated via a bed containing a lime filter material, is characterised in that a removal of iron and/or removal of manganese from the water to be treated is performed in the same apparatus and simultaneously with the deacidification or pH elevation and hardening, and in that instead of periodic backwashing the filter material, after it is exhausted, is discarded, where exhausted denotes that the filter material has decomposed, is no longer to be used for hygienic reasons and/or is blocked with precipitated iron and manganese reaction products. The process is inexpensive and backwashing the water treatment unit is not necessary. <IMAGE>
