In accidents the windscreen and/or rear window form a vulnerable point of the vehicle. In particular when a passenger car collides with a lorry there is the risk of objects jutting out from the lorry or falling therefrom striking these windows and damaging them, or even penetrating and passing into the interior of the vehicle, thus resulting in a corresponding risk of injury for the occupants of the passenger car. The invention envisages the arrangement of at least one lever arm (1) for the engine bonnet and/or boot lid (3) of the vehicle. In the event of a vehicle impact these lever arms (1) cause that side (12) of the bonnet/lid which faces the window (9) to be raised under the action of the impact force. As a result, in the event of a strong impact the bonnet/lid (3) is positioned as a protective shield in front of the vehicle window (9) and hence prevents objects from striking the window (9).
