The pyrotechnically operated actuator has a cylinder (12) with a piston (14) displaceable in it in a sliding manner. The pressure gas produced by a gas generator (28) upon ignition moves the piston (14) inside the cylinder (12) so that a piston rod (18) connected to the piston (14) and led out of the cylinder (12) is displaced. Connected to the piston (14) is a stop element (60) which comes into contact with a second stop element (72) during the displacement of the piston (14) as a result of the ignition of the gas generator (28). The second stop element (72) is adjustable so that the piston stroke can be influenced by appropriate adjustment of the second movable stop element (72). <IMAGE>
