<p>In a production line where a line of workpieces 1 are to be processed at a series of workstations (APU) 11, each of the workpieces 1 has identification data stored thereon 20 relating to the processing required both on that particular workpiece (NOW) and on a number of workpieces (NEXT 1, NEXT 2 etc) upstream of that particular workpiece. The data is read by sensor means (ANT) at each APU. The processing of a workpiece is only carried out when the data read from the storage means on that particular workpiece coincides with data concerning that particular workpiece carried on workpieces that have already arrived at the APU. The system provides for rewriting stored data when a workpiece is removed from the production line eg due to it being faulty. The aim is to reduce APU idle time by providing data on workpiece requirements before the workpiece arrives at the workstation. <IMAGE></p> |
