PURPOSE:To make it possible to infusibilize even an aromatic heavy oil or pitch having a low aromatic carbon ratio, a low molecular weight and a low softening point, which has been unable to be infusibilized and to efficiently produce active carbon fiber by successively carrying out active treatment. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic heavy oil or pitch having >=0.6 aromatic carbon ratio fa, 200-450 molecular weight and <=200 deg.C softening point is subjected to melt spinning, nitrated in a liquid phase in a nitrating reagent in the presence of an aid catalyst and then infusibilized and activated to produce active carbon fiber. |
