To facilitate relative movement between the internal surfaces of a pneumatic tire which come into contact when the tire is run in a deflated condition, the interior of the tire is coated with a lubricant which does not flow at normal tire operating temperatures. The matrix of the lubricant is a polyester, polyurea or polyurethane which does not begin to flow until the tire reaches a temperature of from 65 DEG C to 150 DEG C. If the lubricant were allowed to flow at operating temperatures, it would adversely effect the balance and performance of the tire. The high tire temperature indicates that the tire is flat and reduces the viscosity of (liquifies) the lubricant causing it to flow. The lubricant then reduces rubbing friction and temperature rise which would otherwise occur by rubber-to-rubber contact. The lubricated tire can be run flat to a service station. |
