Wave damping system for damping waves in a body of water bounded by a bottom, comprising: at least one load-bearing, elongate wave damping body which substantially extends in a horizontal direction at an angle to the wave direction; two first anchoring members which are positioned on the wave damping body at two locations spaced apart in the longitudinal direction of the body; a second anchoring member for each first anchoring member, said second member comprising an anchor chain and two anchors linking the two ends of the anchor chain to the bottom, the anchor chain extending substantially transverse to the body. At least one of the first anchoring members comprises an anchor line blocking device which is provided with two pawls each acting on the anchor line opposite directions, and with actuation members for each pawl to move these at will into and out of blocking engagement with the anchor line and keep them there.
