The invention relates to a road sweeper comprising a chassis (1) equipped with a transverse cylindrical brush (9) and a container (10), for collecting the waste swept up, which is located at the front of the brush in the direction (A) of advance of the sweeper and has a bottom (10a) substantially tangent in the service position to the brush (9) in the vicinity of its point of contact with the ground. The container (10) is articulated to the chassis about an axis (11) parallel to the axis (12) of rotation of the brush; a jack (15) hitched between the chassis (1) and the container (10) constitutes a means for manoeuvring the container (10) about its articulation axis (11) between a first extreme position in which the bottom (10a) of the container is displaced above its service position and a second extreme position in which the bottom (10a) is displaced below its service position; retractable means (20) are provided between the container (10) and the chassis (1) for holding the container in an intermediate position corresponding to this service position. <IMAGE>
