The invention relates to a guardrail of the sort in which filling-in panels (6) or bars are held between an upper rail (8) and a lower rail (9) which are fastened by fasteners (10, 11) to vertical uprights (2), these being anchored in the ground and bearing a handrail at the top. This guardrail is characterised in that the said rails (8, 9) have means (13a, 13b; 14a, 14b) so that they can be used equally well for guardrails with filling-in panels (6) or for guardrails with bars.
