In a device for adjusting the angle of inclination of the back rest of a motor vehicle seat, a blocking device which acts in a positively engaging way is provided in a known manner. In addition to this blocking device which acts in a positively engaging way, a friction brake is provided, connected in series with the said blocking device. This additional friction brake is effective even if the blocking device does not move into the operative position as a result of unfavourable operating conditions such as friction or the like.
