What is specified is a process for the production of cylinder heads made of grey cast iron for valve-controlled internal-combustion engines by the sand-casting process, in which a ledeburitic structural formation is obtained in the region of the subsequent valve-seat surface. The procedure is such that the smelt introduced into the casting mould is cooled in a controlled manner in the region of the cylinder-side mouth of the inlet and outlet channel in comparison with the cooling rate in the remaining regions of the casting mould, in such a way that the smelt solidifies with a ledeburitic structure at least in the region of the subsequent valve-seat surfaces. For the controlled cooling of the cylinder head, a cooling element is designed in a special way is arranged in the casting mould.
