The invention relates to an aerosol generator, in particular for the generation of monodisperse aerosols such as calibration aerosols for testing measuring instruments or filters, dosing aerosols for visualising faults or inhalation aerosols for medical purposes. In a Sinclair-La Mer aerosol generator, between core source (4) and saturator (9) is connected a core separator element (7) and a bypass equipped with a valve (6) bypassing the core separator element. By a combination of the bypass round the saturator and setting the total volumetric flow rate and the part-streams, for a relatively variable aerosol concentration, in a large range particles of a desired uniform size can be generated with high precision. First measurements verify that the standard deviation in the overall particle size range of up till now 0.1 to 8 mu m is significantly below 1.15. <IMAGE>
