Such calix¦4¦arene crown ethers whose benzene nuclei are optionally substituted by alkyl groups may be used as extractants, e.g. in the form of a liquid membrane, to separate caesium from acidic solutions containing a large amount of sodium relative to the amount of caesium, such as effluents from spent fuel reprocessing plants.
