The present invention relates to a process for preparing synthetic spinel (fused spinel) from recycled materials (residual materials) or mixtures of recycled materials, which in addition to high Al2O3 contents (> 40%) contain MgO (> 5%) and which, owing to relatively high SiO2 contents (> 5%) and superstoichiometric Al2O3/MgO ratios are not per se suitable for preparing synthetic spinel.
