In a monitoring device for the permanent pilot flame in gas consuming devices having pilot flame burners which has a temperature measuring sensor provided in the vicinity of the pilot flame, it is provided for the purpose of monitoring the permanent pilot flame that the temperature sensor is connected to an evaluation circuit which, as a function of the temperature established in the immediate vicinity of the pilot flame, generates by comparison with a reference variable an electric control signal which controls an optical and/or acoustic signal generator in such a way that at least the presence of the pilot flame is indicated when the latter is ignited.
