PURPOSE:To obtain benzophenoneazine useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of hydrazine and its salt efficiently, by oxidizing benzophenoneimine and an aldehyde with oxygen in the presence of an inexpensive and recurable Co catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Benzophenoneimine of formula I and an aldehyde of formula II: (R is H, 1-12C aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group; n is 1 or 2) are oxidized in the presence of a catalyst of a Co salt, e.g. CoCl2, in an amount of 0.01-2 Co atoms per mole of the compound of formula I to give a benzophenoneazine of formula III. Preferably, a Mn salt, e.g. MnCl2, as a cocatalyst, and an alkyllamine or cyclicamidine as a reaction accelerator may be used. |
