PURPOSE:To properly set a compression ratio in accordance with the image to be compressed. CONSTITUTION:The photographed image data are stored in a frame memory 40, and a lens position encoder 42 detects the relative position of a photographing lens 30 against an image pickup element 32. A distance measuring device 44 measures the distance of a subject in an active system. A lens information memory 46 stores the cut-off frequency information on the space frequency sharacteristic at each position of the working lens 30. A compression parameter deciding circuit 48 refers to the memory 46 and calculates the cut-off space frequency from both outputs of the encoder 42 and the device 44 to decide a proper quantization table in the space frequency range. Then a compressing circuit 50 compresses the image data to be stored in the memory 40 based on the quantization table and stores the compressed image data in a recording medium 52. |
