The invention relates to a light source which emits in any desired wavelength range in the infrared spectrum. An incandescent body (glowing body) is made to glow by electrical means in a closed space which is gastight and filled with a non-oxidising gas or gas mixture. The infrared light passes outside through a material which bounds the space at one or more points and which allows the infrared light of the desired wavelength to be transmitted. As a result, a high incandescent temperature can be achieved on the one hand, and on the other hand a high yield of the infrared light emitted by the incandescent body. The invention can be designed as a small IR light source with a high intensity, and can thus be used for transilluminating cuvettes and for illuminating IR sensors.
