The invention relates to a lifting appliance (10) for hanging in a load hook for gripping and lifting essentially parallelepiped-shaped units (32), with an underpinning safety feature. Such a lifting appliance has at least one crosspiece (14), on the ends of which a rotatably mounted bell-crank lever (16) is arranged in each case. One arm (16w) runs inwards essentially horizontally and is deflected upwards by at least a portion of the lifting force. The other arm (16s, 18) of the bell-crank lever (16) runs essentially perpendicularly in the gripping position of the lifting appliance and grips the unit (32) to be lifted together with the opposite arm of the other bell-crank lever by friction and/or positive locking. According to the invention, the underpinning safety feature of the lifting appliance is characterised in that two further lever components (38L, R) (safety lever) are pivotably connected to pivots (40L, R) in the end area of the crosspiece (14), in that the pivots are coupled to one another via a mechanism in the opposite direction of rotation, and in that one arm (58w), running essentially horizontally, of the respective lever component (38L, R) projects in a safety position under the lifted unit (32). <IMAGE>
