PURPOSE:To obtain a constant polarization fiber having the absolute single polarization band and having a good polarization characteristic by boring holes to the axisymmetrical positions of a specific glass rod and inserting specific glass rods into such holes thereby forming a fiber base material. CONSTITUTION:The holes are bored to the axisymmetrical positions on both sides of the GeO2-SiO2 glass layer of the 1st glass rod having an SiO2-F glass layer on the outside circumference of the GeO2-SiO2 glass layer and having an SiO2 glass layer on the outside circumference of the SiO2-F glass layer. The inside surface of the holes is subjected to flame polishing then to hydrofluoric acid cleaning. The 2nd glass rods having the coefft. of thermal expansion larger than the coefft. of thermal expansion of said SiO2 glass layer are inserted into the holes to form the fiber base material. Such fiber base material is collapsed and is drawn. The constant polarization fiber which is the optical fiber having the inside clad of a refractive index n1 on the outside of the core of a refractive index n2 and having further the outside clad of refractive index n0 (where n1<n0<n2) on the outside thereof and is provided with the structure having the glass layers having the large coefft. of thermal expansion on both sides of the core and applying axis-asymmetrical stress to the core is thus obtd. |
