PURPOSE:To automatically recover from the pause state if a residual medium is removed by providing a residual medium detecting part for making dry reading of the output of a photo sensor in the state where no paper sheet exists and suspending reading of paper sheets and a recovery part. CONSTITUTION:A paper sheet reader comprises a residual medium detecting part 3 for making dry reading of the output of a photo sensor in the state where a paper sheet is not irradiated, comparing the dry reading data with the preceding dry reading data and acknoledging the existence of a residual medium 5 in the photo sensor if at least one of the differences is above a specified value so as to suspend reading of a paper sheet and a recovery part 4 for making dry reading of the output of the photo sensor according to a recovery instruction, comparing the dry reading data with a designated initial value of the dry reading data of the photo sensor and clearing the preceding dry reading data and releasing the suspension of reading if every difference is below a specified value. |
