OPTICALLY ANISOTROPIC PITCH COMPOSITION

PURPOSE:To obtain a pitch composition useful as a binder having an excellent effect of preventing foaming upon heating and used for obtaining a high-quality molded carbon material by mixing an optically anisotropic pitch with carbon black in a specified ratio. CONSTITUTION:The composition is prepared by mixing 100 pts.wt. optically anisotropic pitch (e.g. a pitch of an anisotropic pitch content of 100%, obtained by polymerizing naphthalene in the presence of HF/BF3) with 0.1-100 pts.wt. carbon black, desirably one having a mean particle diameter of 5-100nm, a nitrogen adsorption specific surface area of 10m<2>/g or above and a dibutyl phthalate absorption of 20ml/100g or above.
