PRODUCTION OF ALKYL-SUBSTITUTED HYDROQUINONE

PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as photographic chemicals, etc., in high efficiency and yield by reacting a hydroquinone compound with a specific alpha-olefin in the presence of activated clay under specific condition. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound is produced by reacting a hydroquinone compound with a 6-30C alpha-olefin such as 1-hexene in the presence of activated clay as an acid catalyst. Water contained in the activated clay is removed before and/or during the reaction. The reaction is carried out by placing a solid basic substance such as sodium acetate and/or a solid desiccant such as molecular sieves in the reaction system and preferably using an aprotic organic solvent such as octane as a solvent for azeotropic distillation and/or for reaction.
