The apparatus and method finds whether it is the caption tape or not, by interpreting a decoded video signal to display the result on TV screen as the message. The apparatus includes a VCR recording and playback part, a microcomputer for controlling the finding of caption tape and a screen display of the result, a caption decoder for decoding the video signal outputted from the recording and playback part, an on-screen displayer, and a switch.
