PURPOSE:To attain a high speed of an initial drive by a method wherein the drive by a low-torque drive sequence is executed first, and when this is discriminated as not being conducted normally, switchover is made to a high-torque drive sequence and the initial drive is retried. CONSTITUTION:An initial drive sequence for determining a reference of the position of a carrier of a printer 10 is formed of a low-torque drive sequence and a high-torque drive sequence, and a low-torque drive sequence storage means 12L and a high-torque drive sequence storage means 12H are provided in ROM 12. First, an initial drive based on the low-torque drive sequence is executed with a low torque and at a high speed. In the case when the number of pulses given to a CA motor drive circuit 18D of a stepping motor 18 does not coincide with a count value of detected pulses of a count circuit 6C of an encoder 6, on the occasion, the drive is discriminated as abnormal, switchover is made to the high-torque drive sequence and the initial drive is retried at a low speed. |
