PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal display device which greatly contributes to improvement in display quality, an increase in size, an increase in resolution, and color display and is superior in mass-productivity and reliability. CONSTITUTION:A phase difference plate 2 made of a uniaxially extended high polymer film and an optical anisotropic body 3 having twist structure of 60-130 deg. in twist angle are arranged on either of the front and back surface of a supertwisted nematic liquid crystal panel 10 having twist structure of >=180 deg. in twist angle. Therefore, rotation light characteristic caused by passing through the STN liquid crystal panel 10 is eliminated, the phase difference between the STN liquid crystal panel and phase difference plate can be compensated over the entire visible wavelength domain, and complete achromatism is obtained. Consequently, the black-and-white level of display is improved and the contrast ratio is improved. Further, the optical anisotropic body which is 60-130 deg. in twist angle is used to control wavelength dispersibility of retardation values, so the phase difference plate made of a different kind of high polymer film can freely be used. |
