A surgical instrument for simultaneously deforming a plurality of fastene rs including at least one jaw member having a stationary plate member and a movable plate member, the movable plate member being longitudinally slidable within the jaw, each plate member having a plurality of slots passing therethrough, a pair of bars longitudinally disposed within the jaw, the bars having projections adapted to pass at least partially through the plurality of plate member slots, and a plurality of fasteners disposed between the bars, wherein movement of the movable plate member causes each of the bars to move laterally towards each other, thereby simultaneously deforming the fasteners.
