PURPOSE:To obtain an agent for forming an amide bond and usable in the synthesis of peptide and other amides and to provide a process for forming an amide. CONSTITUTION:An amino acid derivative expressed by the formula W-Y can be produced in high yield and purity by reacting an active ester expressed by the general formula W-O-p-C6H4-S<+>(CH3)2.X<-> (W is arylsulfonyl group or amino acid residue; X is halogen ion, perchlorate ion, bisulfate ion, methylsulfate ion or p-toluenesulfonate ion; Y is amino acid residue which may have proper protecting group introduced into the side chain and/or alpha-carboxyl group) with an amino acid expressed by the general formula H-Y.
