PURPOSE:To prolong the service life of an electrolytic cell and to stabilize the operation of the cell by exchanging a rubber sheet stuck to a separation plate in the box-shaped ion-exchange-membrane electrolytic cell. CONSTITUTION:Aq. NaCl is electrolyzed in an electrolytic cell to produce NaOH and gaseous Cl2. In this case, an anode 4 is covered with a bag-shaped ion- exchange membrane 1, the opening 2 of the membrane 1 is inserted into the slit of a separation plate 6 coated with a rubber sheet 13 and sealed with a plug 3 from inside the opening 2 of the membrane 1, and the box-shaped ion- exchange-membrane electrolytic cell is separated into the anode compartment and cathode compartment. In this case, the rubber sheet 13 is deteriorated by the generated gaseous Cl2 and hardened, the plug 3 is loosened the H2 generated from a cathode 5 is mixed with the gaseous Cl2 from the anode to form a dangerous explosive gas, and the gaseous Cl2 is diluted as the product. To avoid the danger, the rubber sheet 13 on the separation plate 6 is exchanged for a fresh one to prolong the service life of the electrolytic cell, the defects are obviated, and the purity of gaseous Cl2 is not decreased. |
