The present invention relates to a device serving as a desk for reading and writing when lying or sitting. The need for this arises from the fact that holding a book or magazine in the hands in order to read while lying down, in bed for example, quickly becomes uncomfortable and tiring for the arms. The device comprises a desk (1) consisting of an open frame (2) approximately 40 cm wide by 25 cm high. Stretched horizontally across this frame from one upright to the other are two very fine nylon or steel wires (3). These hold the book in a vertical or inclined position. The book rests on a support (4) while the spine of the book is supported by a hinged plate (5) fitted with a return spring and a stop (6). In this position, the space between the book and the frame allows the fingers to be passed through the frame to turn the page. Once the page has been turned, the book and plate (5) are moved back on to the desk (1) and reading can be continued. <IMAGE>
