PURPOSE:To obtain a new benzothiophene.indole-substituted maleimide derivative useful as a photochromic material and an optical recording material. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I or formula II (R is (substituted) hydrocarbon group; R<1> and R<2> are H, alkyl, alkoxy or alkylthio; R<3> is alkyl or acyl; either one of R<1> and R<2> is alkoxy or alkylthio; rings A and B may be substituted with alkyl, alkoxy or halogen), e.g. a-(2-methylthianaphthenyl-3-)-beta-(2- methyl-N-octadecylindolyl-3-)-N-cyanomethylmaleimide. This compound can be produced by the simultaneous condensation and dehydrative cyclization of an indolyl-3-oxalylamide derivative of formula III with a thianaphthenyl-3- acetyl halide derivative of formula IV. The ring-opened compound of formula I has dark yellow color and the ring-closed compound of formula II obtained by the irradiation with actinic light has green color. The compound is isomerized from the state of formula I to the state of formula II in high isomerization rate, the color-development and extinction contrast is high and the isomerized molecule has high stability. |
