A coating is disclosed for metallic or non-metallic substrates. The surface of the substrate is at least partially provided with a heat-, thermal shock-, wear-, impact- and/or corrosion-resistant coat applied by a thermal process, having several layers based on at least one coating component from at least one of the groups of thermally stratifying substances. The coat has at least two mutually bonded layers. The substrate itself is bonded to a substantially compact, at least unilayer basis layer ("first layer"), applied by a thermal coating process, bonded in turn to at least one at least unilayer additional or covering layer ("second layer") applied by a thermal spraying process and containing finely or ultra-finely dispersed particles of at least one of the abovementioned stratifying agents, compounds, metals and/or alloys having a specific surface area of at least 6 m<2>/g, in particular at least 8 m<2>/g (according to Blaine). Said particles from an intermediate layer formed before the additional layer is sprayed on the basis layer are applied into and distributed in the additional layer. A process and equipment for producing this coating are also disclosed.
