The invention relates to the area of metallurgy and concerns a method and an apparatus which can be used, for example, in the production of wire. The object on which the invention is based is to specify a method and an apparatus in which good friction coefficients are achieved in the dry drawing process and, at the same time, as smooth as possible metallic formed stock is obtained which is also temporarily protected against corrosion. The object is achieved by means of a method for thinning a residual lubricant film on metallic forming stock in strand form in which water and/or washing liquid is pumped out of a thermostated tank via a measuring device into a chamber through which the forming stock passes. The water and/or the washing fluid flows in the chamber at a speed of v > 0.3 m/s. The washing liquid is returned to the thermostated tank from the chamber.
