The invention relates to a mowing filament for a free-cutting appliance which has a cutting head driven in rotation by a drive motor and having a supply reel, onto which the mowing filament consisting of thermoplastic is wound over a plurality of turns. During the rotation of the cutting head, an end portion of the mowing filament is oriented approximately radially outwards, in order, as a cutting element, to cut the growth. In order to guarantee a fault-free unwinding of the mowing filament, the latter is provided at least with a covering consisting of a flexible partially cross-linked plastic.
