PURPOSE:To suppress a decrease in the luminance of a display image and keep the white balance of the display image by the image display device which displays the image on a PDP. CONSTITUTION:The image display device which displays the image based upon an input digital video signal (R, G, and B signals) on the PDP 1 detects whether or not there is a skin color part as a stored color of said display image by a skin color detection part 2 and detects the luminance of the display image by a luminance detection part 3, and information on the presence or absence of the skin color and the luminance is inputted to an arithmetic part 4 to calculate data for gamma correction corresponding to the information; and a gamma-RAM 5 is rewritten with the data, the gamma correction of the input digital video signal is made with the data in the gamma-RAM 5, and the PDP 1 is driven with the gamma-corrected signal. Then the range of the input digital video signal level for keeping the white balance of the display image is varied according to the luminance of the skin color part (or luminance of the whole display image or means luminance) to keep the white balance below the luminance of the skin color part.
