A civil-engineering structure using the polder principle, in which a supporting surface, for example a roadway, is arranged in a sunken pit below the prevailing groundwater level, for which purpose the base and the raised walls of the said pit are of watertight design, the surface being of load-spreading design, and counterweights rest on the surface.
