The device includes a KEY input means having a variable speed designating key; a detecting means for detecting a rotation speed of a capstan motor; a character generating means; and a controlling means for reading out the value detected by the detecting means, obtaining a variable speed value setting against the rotation speed value of the capstan motor in normal playing back mode and then transmitting the variable speed value to the letter generating means.
