A child resistant cigarette lighter (10) is disclosed of the type employing a liquid reservoir (14) of ignitable fluid, a friction wheel (16) and flint (76) for providing a spark and a user controlled valve (50) for beginning and ending the flow of gaseous fuel to be ignited by the spark. The child resistant features include the location of the user controlled valve operator (20) at a point on the reservoir body which makes it difficult if not impossible for a child to simultaneously operate the valve operator and the thumb wheel with a single hand.
