In order to create a reciprocating piston engine with improved efficiency and increased power, it is proposed to form the cylinders (1) into a first rotary element (2), which rotates in a ring-shaped cylinder head (7). A second rotary element (6), which by way of positive synchronisation devices (11) rotates either counter to or in the same direction as the first rotary element (2), is rotationally fixed to the crankshaft (5), which is driven by the pistons (3) running in the cylinders (1) by way of connecting rods (4). Due to the rotation of the rotary elements (2, 6) the power output of the reciprocating piston engine can be doubled, compared to known reciprocating piston engines with the same displacement. At the same time, moveable valves in the cylinder head are no longer necessary (Fig.2). <IMAGE>
