Profiled steps and profiled grooves are fashioned on a grating body along stepped profiles. The grating body is subjected to chemical (electroless) plating. Since the grooves have narrow bottom zones, these remain unplated, so that a chemical-plating layer is formed on the entire surface of the grating body with the exception of the said bottom zones. The grating body, which is provided with the chemical-plating layer formed thereon, is then subjected to an electroplating step. A priming plating layer is generated on the chemical-plating layer which is formed on those sections, to which a decorative cladding is to be applied. The chemical-plating layer formed on those sections, on which no decorative cladding is to be produced, is dissolved by means of a predetermined solution. Then a general electroplating layer is provided on the priming plating layer. Thus the chemical- and the electroplating layer are formed only on the sections to be plated. A plating layer which comprises both the chemical- and the electroplating layer is masked with an electroforming mask, and a coating layer is formed on the exposed sections, the edges of the electroforming mask being precisely alignable with the edges of the plating layer. The boundaries between the coating or covering layer and the decorative plating layer can thus be clearly defined.
