PROCESS FOR PRODUCING DIALKYL CARBONATE

The proposal is for a process for producing dialkyl carbonate from CO2 in which the reaction with the alkoxy group of an alkoxy compound is performed at high temperature and pressure in the presence or absence of a catalyst. Preference is given to alkoxy compounds with two or more especially geminal alkoxy groups, especially acetals of ketones or aldehydes, full ethers of diols or triols, full esters of dicarboxylic acids or orthocarboxylic acid ester, and the use of alcohols can be wholly dispensed with or reduced. Half-esters of carbon dioxide may be used instead of CO2. The compounds occurring through the expulsion of the alkoxy group, e.g. acetone occurring from dimethoxy propane, can, after separation from the product with alcohol, be converted into acetal, the water being separated harmlessly. The catalysts which can be used are oxides of tin or other elements of the 4th main group, possibly with other catalyst metals or their compounds, in the substance or applied to substrates or in ion exchangers.
